INSTA-LOO Pilot in Burundi Demonstrates Strong Impact

Nordisan recipients receiving the toilets Burundi

We are proud to share that the field testing of INSTA-LOO — our new, affordable waterless emergency toilet designed in Sweden — has been successfully completed.

In partnership with ACK Civils Africa, the 3-week pilot program at Kateri Camp in Cibitoke, Burundi brought INSTA-LOO into the homes of five families. The results were overwhelmingly positive: every family requested to keep their INSTA-LOO after the trial.

Key Findings

  • Universal acceptance: 100% of users found INSTA-LOO hygienic and effective at containing odors.

  • Restored dignity and safety: Families, particularly women, youth, and the elderly, reported feeling safer and more comfortable.

  • Ease of use: Simple to set up, intuitive to use, and far more practical than shared latrines.

  • Preferred option: Chosen consistently over open defecation or overcrowded, unsanitary alternatives.

  • High demand: Multiple households asked for continued access, underlining the urgent need for scale-up.

Next Steps

While feedback was overwhelmingly positive, valuable learnings will guide further development:

  • Improving privacy solutions and storage options

  • Establishing bag collection & distribution systems that create local business opportunities in camps

  • Strengthening education and training for even simpler adoption

This pilot proves what we believe: INSTA-LOO is more than a toilet — it’s a safe, dignified, and scalable sanitation solution for crisis settings.

With user satisfaction and strong demand confirmed, the next stage is to expand testing, trial alternative designs, and bring this innovation to more communities in need.
